Mrs. Jetplane's Reading List

I'll be honest, over the last 5 years or so I have really gotten into reading again. During the wedding planning process reading books took a back seat to wedding craziness, but I do thoroughly enjoy reading again.

I try to read a book every 2 weeks. Since I work in an office, I try get out of the office and read for an hour a day. It gets me away from my desk and allows me to de-stress. If a book is really good, I'll read at night and on the weekends.

Now, I'm not going to lie and say that I read only the classics or thought provoking self help books, or whatever else would make me sound incredibly deep because that would be a flat out lie. I do read biographies, non-fiction, fiction, a little poetry, chick lit, a little sci fi... I have read all the Harry Potter books (so has Mr. Jetplane) and all the Twilight books (so has Mr. Jetplane). But I do like to mix it up a bit. I've read a lot of Stephen King and Thomas Harrison, but I've also enjoyed Steinbeck and Jon Krakauer and a little Jennifer Weiner or Janet Evanovich for good measure on holiday. Since I drive ALOT going back and forth to the Midwest, Mr. Jetplane and I tend to listen to books on tape, I've listen to almost all of Nicholas Sparks books (atleast the ones on sale..) and Candace Bushnell books.

Well, as I've gushed about my undying (no pun intended) love for the Sookie Stackhouse series, I purchased the 8th book yesterday, and I am sad that I have to wait unti May to read the 9th. So that being the case I also picked up these 2 books to keep me occupied.

Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

I heard this book and movie were fabulous and I refuse to watch the movie before I read the book.

The Witches of Eastwick by John UpdikeI have wanted to read this book and its sequel for quite some time but just haven't. I loved the 80's movie and now they are going to make a television show based on it so I thought I'd give it a read.

What are my favorite books.... Well my favorite book in the world... its kinda strange, but Dante's Inferno. I also like Ordinary People and Of Mice and Men. I read all of these in my high school honors English classes.

Some books that I have liked very much and would recommend:

1. Into the Wild
2. Under the Banner of Heaven (about fundamentalist Mormons, and is highly criticized)
3. Water for Elephants

Well and of course Sookie Stackhouse series... like duh....

And I must comment on one book that I absolutely hated and it took me forever to finish...

Eat, Pray, Love

I'm sorry to the millions upon millions that loved it.... I liked Italy but couldn't stand the rest of it. It wasn't awe inspiring to mind blowing to me... maybe I need to be older and be going through a divorce, not sure.

What are your favorite books? What would you recommend? Summer is coming up and my reading kicks into high gear with vacations, laying on the beach, etc.

Thank you! I HATED Eat, Pray, Love, and I always feel like I am the only one who feels that way!

Jane Austen still is my favorite with Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. I also just read The Reader which I enjoyed very much (without having seen the film yet).

I mostly do the classics, but I do enjoy the occasional Sophie Kinsella book like Something Borrowed.

Revolutionary Road is next on my list. It is one of the best 100 books ever written so says Time.

I HATED Eat Pray Love. I cannot think of a book I disliked more. Seriously. It was terrible. She was soooo self-indulging and self-centered I couldn't handle it.

There is nothing insightful about that.

I usually only read classics. I'm a huge literature snob. I won't touch a chick lit book.

Since you read the other vamp books, you should try the House of Night Series by PC & Kristin Cast. The first book in the series is Marked. So far, there are 5 books (the newest one just came out this month).
I can't wait for the newest Sookie book to come out. I love that series!

I love Nicholas Sparks books! I have read all of them! :)

I am on the 4th Twilight book at the moment, haven't been able to put them down!!

Also, I love Lauren Weisberger books. She wrote the Devil Wears Prada... but she also has written "Chasing Harry Winston" and "Everyone Worth Knowing"... both are great, light, girly reads!

Have you read the Phillip Pulman "His Dark Materials" trilogy? If you like HP and Twilight, I think you'd also enjoy these three books. One of my favorite books of all time is the Time Travelers Wife. I was heartbroken when it was over because I enjoyed the characters so much. I also like anything by Jodi Picoult (oh, except the 10th circle- just awful!!). If your husband likes baseball or if you are just in the mood for a seriously fun loving coming of age story, Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger is fantastically hilarious. I'll have to do a post on it someday! Less than two weeks until he's home???? So wonderful for you!

I am a big fan of Jodi Picoult. She has a new one out this week - 'Handle with Care'. I've never read a bad book by her.

If you're looking for fun, light summer reading, check out Emily Giffin. She has several really breezy, funny books. 'Something Borrowed' is my favorite by her.

I haaaaaated Eat, Pray, Love. She was soooo self-centered and irresponsible, it drove me absolutely crazy. I read half of "Italy" and then threw it out. Horrible book!

It's nice to know I'm not the only crazy one. I read about The Witches of Eastwick coming to tv yesterday. My first though... "I wonder if there's a book." I also want to read Revolutionary Road.

Mr. Jetplane read the Twilight books? Love it!

I love all of Jane Green's books. If you've never read her, she's a lot like Jennifer Weiner. One of my favorites is The Autobiography of Vivian by Sherri Krantz. I think there's 3 books in the series.

I couldn't even finish Eat Pray Love, really I couldn't. It's nice to know someone else didn't like it either.
One of my favorite books is Rain Of Gold by Victor Villasenor, I guess cos it really parallels the life that my grandparents had when they worked the fields... it is just such a great story.
Right now I'm reading Inkheart and I can't put it down! Hahaha!

I didn't even try to read Eat, Pray, Love! So don't feel bad. I knew I wouldn't like it.

I like chick lit as well, I'm a history major so the light reading is nice compared to the heavy stuff I read for school.

I read a lot of historical fiction. I have read pretty much everything Philippa Gregory has written about England during Henry VIII life and shortly thereafter. It's not historically accurate so people should always bear in mind that the fiction much outweighs the history. But it's entertaining.

You should do a review of Revolutionary Road!

I was going to email you later today, to ask you which I should read first Sookie or Twilight series. Guess it's clear to Ebay I go. This year forty thought EPL dragged a bit, but something has to happen in your life that you really can relate with letting go to deeply understand. Since you have read these two series, I would suggest you go back to 1976 with Anne Rice and meet Lestat!

I as well hated Eat, Pray love...Too much new age crap. I need to read the FLDS book...I am so missing Big Love...Makes me home sick. ;)

I liked Eat, Pray, Love (eat and love more than pray) because of the travel aspect. However, it wasn't one of my favorites.

I liked Under the Banner of Heaven a great deal too, even more than Into the Wild and Into Thin Air. I suggest Escape by Carolyn Jessop and The 19th Wife for follow ups to those books. Very good!

2 more suggestions since you like to read like I do :)
1. The Thirteenth Tale
2. The Double Bind

Love love love these!

I wasn't too into Eat, Pray, Love either.

I love the Sookie series! So happy others know about it :). You'll have to tell me how the John Updike books are. I'm reading Anne Rice now (I've never read any of her books before).

Favorite books of all time though?
The Alchemist
Ahab's Wife
Mary Called Magdaline
The Shack
Twilight
Harry Potter
Jane Austin

Revolutionary Road is on my list of books to read this summer. You'll have to do a review to let us know how you like it.

I love all of Jen Lancaster's books. Have you read any? Super fun, easy reads, you will laugh out loud.

On a more serious note, I love The Way the Crow Flies and Fall On Your Knees by Anne-Marie Macdonald. Heavy, but so good.

Ooh, and since you love the fantasy stuff, you must read The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray. They are about witches and a fantasy world. I'm a sucker for those kinds of books! They are a little more like Twilight (young adult) but not quite as cheesy - and I say that with love b/c I LOVED Twilight.

Actually, I have all of these books. So if you want, I'd be happy to pass them along...

We are reading Revolutionary Road in a few months for my book club, I'm really looking forward to it as well.

I also hated EatPrayLove. Pray was actually my favorite chapter. I really don't get all the hype over it.

I was just thinking the other day I really need to pick up some books. I actually minored in English. It was my break from design classes and three hours labs daily. In the summers during college, I would read tons of books, but once I graduated I moved and then a few months later we got engaged so I haven't honestly read a book in forever.

Let me know how Revolutionary Road is. I almost picked it up a few weeks ago.
