Here's where I need your help...

Hello one and all that read this lil ol bloggie of mine....

As some may know, Mr. Jetplane bought me a nice, new camera for my birthday this year. I've started trying to learn this new fangled contraption and I'm really enjoying it. This lil man got plenty of work in over our recent homecomings and I have since volunteered to be the squadron photographer for all (or most) of the events that we host/attend.

So here's where you come in...what else do I need...what do you suggest...

I have a Canon Rebel T1i EOS.

Christmas is coming up and I plan on asking for things associated with the camera. I need editing software - what software is the best (not the most expensive). I need a light thingy (yes that's technical for you) that attaches to the top of the camera. What other lens do you suggest?

Apologies if I sound like a total idiot...but I kinda am when it comes to all this. I have been looking up things online but I thought I would ask for guidance from the all-knowing Internet. I know there are plenty of budding photographers out there...can you help a sista out :)

Thank you!

UPDATE: Thank you for the help. I should say that I do have the EFS 18-55 lens. I thought that came with my camera standard, but I guess I am wrong.

I have the 50mm f1.8 that's very affordable and produces awesome shots. I've read that the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is a great lens as well.

I also have the 50 mm 1.4 which is a terrific lens for portraits. You can buy an inexpensive flash on amazon (off brand) that will do the trick. Unfort. the standard flash on our cameras are not strong enough in darker situations. Don't have a software solution for you, but would love to know what everyone suggests. Good luck!

As far as editing software, I use Photoshop and Lightroom... if you don't want to invest in Photoshop or the full CS5, Lightroom is a great way to go for basic edits.

Asking what other lens to get requires information about what sort of pictures you like to take. I know everyone raves about the 50mm series, but I probably haven't picked mine up in two years, because I never take portraits. I love landscape/travel photography, so for me, the ideal lens is wide angle. Before you think about what lens you want, it's important to consider what you are looking for from a lens: portraits, landscape, one single multi-purpose lens to take on vacation, etc.

I recommend Photoshop Elements... it's an inexpensive (about $100 I think) way to get started in photoshop without spending $700 or more.

I shoot currently on a Canon EOS t1i And have recently been working with RAW format as well. I ONLY use Photoshop Lightroom. I find it basic and also ease to understand. Under the develop tab for Lightroom I find the most use out of the program.
Basic Lenses to have for occassions
50mm f/ 1.8 Is the cheapest but a 1.4 Would be IDEAL
A 24-70mm f/ 2.8
70-300f/ 2.8
And a 80mm
I also recommend the Canon 580EXII I find that flash useful.

I'm no expert so my best advice is to sign up for a class! It can be a Christmas present AND it'll totally help you learn about your camera faster! I wish I had taken one because I took pictures at my cousins wedding (She didn't have the $ for a professional and I did it as her wedding gift, so for free!) and I didn't learn about white balance until AFTER the wedding. Grrr! My pictures could have been so much better! But they came out well enough and she was thrilled with them so good enough I guess. :) Good luck!
