Just a lil taste...

Of the Jetplanes' Fall Decor. Up first is our family room. Let me start off my saying I absolutely hate our fireplace. Its a weird abnormal height, its been converted into gas and has an ugly surround, and the mantle is a baby mantle. But it is what it is for now. I would also like to say that the wood trim in the windows have been primed and is ready for their last (hopefully) coat of white paint. The 25 year old 1" wood blinds are no longer and will be replaced hopefully in the next month or so. ( I may have worked for Levelor in the past know my blinds people!)

Next up is our entry way. I love it and sorry I don't have better close up pictures.
The majority of the items come from the Dollar Store, Target, and around the house. I used Harry Potter and Sookie books sans covers to create height on the table. The blood drippings came from the Dollar Store. I have them all over our front windows as well. The wine glass is filled with eyeball gum which I have since devoured. I also have my prized glass skull which I bought at TJ Maxx last year for $4.00 people. I love it. It holds paperclips on my desk the rest of the year. Yeah...I'm a freakshow, I don't care :)
Pay no attention to the rest of the chaos that is our house right now. We haven't put down floor trim yet, you'll notice paint swatches on the wall (from family and living rooms), the missing light switch plate cover from the kitchen (since we ripped all the wallpaper down), and a slightly unfinished gallery wall in the hallway. Our house is a work in progress people :)
I'm kinda sad this year, because I'm usually more into decorating, especially the outside. This year I just don't have it in me :(

On the rocks please...

I am on the lookout for an awesome bar cart or a cabinet, table, etc. that can easily be used as a bar cart. Perhaps it is well known that the Jetplanes like to partake in adult beverages, right now I'm extremely partial to 3 Olives Cherry Vodka. I also enjoy gin and tonics, wine, champagne, and the occasional light beer...but enough about me and my drinking habits.

I want a bar cart and I know exactly where I want it to go in the family room. To my total surprise, Mr. Jetplane is on board for this one. He thinks a lot of my ideas are crazy...I mean really crazy. But luckily I can show him 4 or 5 pictures of what I'm talking about and he now agrees I might not have lost my mind.
Bring on the drinks.... and any suggestions you may have for bar carts... I'm looking for cheap option people, putting in new hardwoods is expensive.

Black or White - Part 2

Thank you all for your input on the kitchen cabinet color. You all are offering very valid points. I thought I should show you the other side of the kitchen. It is relatively large space.

Obviously the light fixture will be changed, window treatments burned, and the trim will become white. I think we will have beadboard run up the walls about 4 ft with a wide chair rail. The beadboard will run into the 2nd half of the kitchen near along the pantry and side of the fridge. All the floor trim will be replaced with thicker trim and painted white.

So does this change your thoughts on black v. white kitchen cabinets?

Is it Black or White...

No I'm not talking Michael Jackson here...I'm talking the color of our kitchen cabinets. Do I go black or white?

Black? Like Gwenie Paltrow's kitchen...

Or white like this gorgeous kitchen...

That is the question my friends. Our counter top is a Corian and appears to be relatively new. It is tan with flecks of white, gray, and black. The flooring we are putting in is a dark, real wood that will be carried in from the living room to the kitchen and into the family room. The wood color is similar to the flooring in the picture of the white kitchen above.

Here is the kitchen in all its glory with the original owner's belongings.

What was your first thought? Those kitchen cabinets on the right have to go??? Well that's what we thought too... Day 1 we ripped out the cabinets. Excuse the 2 big boxes we used those to help us hold the cabinets in place while removing all the screws, nails, and whatever else had been holding those things up since 1986.

So what's the consensus....black or white?

We have purchased fixtures for over the kitchen table and the sink, those are brushed nickel and were cheap at Lowe's so the new cabinet hardware will be brushed nickel. We are also set on removing the top portion of the Corian that is used as a backsplash. These pieces are glued on and not a portion of the countertop. This will be replaced with white subway tile with white or a gray/black grout.

So do we go black or white?

* Sorry I do not have links for the 2 kitchen pictures, if you do, please advise and I will give appropriate credit.

** FYI - All the appliances will be replaced. All trim work will be white and all doors are getting replaced with new, white doors.

Casa de Jetplane #2 Update

Well, we're in full swing over here preparing for the upcoming move and future renters in our current abode.

And with all this, I have been day dreaming about future house and what it will look like (when we're done with it). Can you tell this house was built in the late 80s....

The top cabinets on the right will be going. Pendant lighting will be going in its place. Of course the lighting will be gone as well.
This is the view from the family room. The counter top is new as is the sink. Those will be staying (for cost reasons) but the back splash will be leaving. They are individual pieces glued to the wall. Subway tile will be going in its place. The counter is actually fairly short, I'm looking for shorter metal stools. I think I have found some on Overstock, but I need to measure.

Here is the eat in kitchen. There are 3 large windows on the side. Its actually fairly large area. I would like to have a built in window seat and a large built in china cabinet on the wall. New lighting...obviously.

The flooring in the entire house will be replaced, that's the first thing that is happening...oh so exciting. That right there, will change the entire look of this dated house.
Below are my inspiration pictures. I apologize that I don't have the links for the credits. I have a bad problem of not keeping track especially on my work computer. If you know the link, please let me know and I would happily give credit where credit is most definitely due.

Lovely pendent lighting, white tile, great metal stools... what's not to love. Right?Yes, there is an obviously theme here...
But my favorite is this kitchen by LAKBdesign, posted by House of Turquoise last week I believe. I had an immediate reaction to this kitchen, and those red stools....TDF, am I right?? This new house is truly going to be a labor of love... So much is going to be happening to the Jetplanes in the next 3 years as we live in this house... a deployment, holidays apart, easing into a life out West, and hopefully having a child... Its an exciting and scary time.

Latest Inspirations

First things first...sorry I have been a bad blogger lately. I don't really have much of an excuse. I don't feel like I have all that much to say...well that has any entertainment value... I promise I'll try to be better...I'll try.

That being said I wanted to show you a couple of things that have inspired me lately. I saw this piece of art on a blog about a month or so ago, I apologize I cannot figure out which home decor blog it was, so I deeply apologize. (if you know, please tell me) It appears to be felt pieces stitched together. I am been day dreaming about doing something simliar for weeks now. I hope to do some shopping this week to get supplies.

Secondly this was posted on Twig & Thistle earlier this month. I am thinking about doing something similar to give as gifts to our local (couples) friends. I have some great twine that I have been wanting to use and I will create holiday tags for them. Can't wait!! I know Mr. Jetplane will think I'm an idiot but oh well.

Have you all started thinking about Holiday cards??? I've been scouring the internet for cards... I want to use a picture from our family shoot this past spring with the dogs...

Decisions...Decisions... I like a lot of the cards on http://www.tinyprints.com/ and http://www.minted.com/. For cheaper options don't forget to look at Snapfish and Vistaprint. They have some great options for your as well that are cheaper.

I created and purchased our wedding rehearsal invites and Thank You cards from Snapfish. I used a photo and created postcards...they were nice quality and we received alot of positive feedback. You never have to spend a lot of money to create and send something to family and friends.
Enjoy the rest of your week...and look forward to Pug Friday tomorrow!!

Random Weekend Ramblings

1. Friday we attended a Brief at the Squadron to discuss what will be our lives after Mr. Jetplane completes flight school. We can stay here, go to England, or go to Idaho. We learned pro's and con's to all of the bases - QOL (Quality of Life), Geography, Flying, Deployment cycle, etc. Mr. Jetplane will get to rank his choices - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. His grades and the needs of the AF will make the decision. We'll know next spring where we are off to and then we'll decide if we're ready to start trying to have a baby or not.

2. Here are some samples of paint colors we've selected for the kitchen. I have paint swatches on a couple spots in the kitchen. I'll post one next to the kitchen cabinets later this week. I prefer the middle. The colors are Limeade, California Roll, and Green Apple.

3. This weekend we took the dogs to the vet to get their shots, got lost in the middle of nowhere because my GPS doesn't even know where we are when we're at our house (since we live in BFE)...just to find out that Mr. (my navigator in life and in the jet) took us the most round about way. We showed up 20 minutes late...FYI its only 7 miles away from the house.

4. We went and saw Couples Retreat on Saturday. It was funny...it wasn't OMG I'm going to throw up because I can't stop laughing funny...but it was funny. Now that we're married you start to think about things differently so the movie touched a cord with us. And we'll always go to Applebee's together... (topic from movie)

5. Out to the movie I sported my new Warriors In Pink scarf I blogged about early this month. *I might be giving one away on this lil blog later this week*6. The Jetplanes took their first time to Sam's Club together this weekend. We bought Gatorade, Garlic Bread, Lunch Meat, Hand Soap, Protein Drinks (Mr.), Granola Bars, Fruit, etc. On the way home Mr Jetplane turns to me and asks... "What happened to us?" Ha ha.

7. Sunday I had to return things to Target and TJMaxx. FYI- my TJMaxx isn't a Home Goods...yes please feel sorry for me. I stopped at JCP for their Friends and Family Sale. I haven't shopped inside a JCP in years. I did my office desk online, but that doesn't count. I have been looking for blue/navy pillows for our living room. JCP was having buy 1 pillow for full price and get the other for 88 cents. Plus I had 20% off coupon. The striped pillow is normally $40 and the navy velvet pillow $25. I got them both for under $30. Success!! 8. The parental units are coming tomorrow. I have to pick them up from the Raleigh airport tomorrow evening...

Happy Monday. I have a busy day in the office today thru Wednesday, I'm taking Thursday and Friday off to spend with the parents. Have a great week.

Dogs - 1 Mrs. Jetplane - 0

(Front Porch prior to yesterday) Scene: Wednesday afternoon around 4:45pm

It is cold and raining, the dogs needed to go outside and I heard my office phone ringing. I was expecting a phone call, it should only last 15 minutes. The dogs will end up going onto the backporch to get out of the rain. Plus they have some internal clock which tells them to start flipping out around 5pm because they know its time to eat.
I'm on the phone and I hear Charlie barking from the right side of the house. Nothing unusual, we have the houses to our left and our right for sale. People are constantly looking at them, workers inspecting things on the properties, etc. Yes, I'm sure our huge, white dog is a great selling feature...no matter... I hear his barking and just assume someone is next door. I continue with my call and its finished around 5:05 and I head to the kitchen. Charlie is at the back door and eager to get in the house. He is barking...no worries...he's just hungry. I get their food from the garage and open the door to the back deck. Charlie runs in and wants to eat..nothing new. I yell for Milo...he's not coming in... I yell "Time to Eat Dinner!" (FYI - He runs for the words Dinner, Food, and Treat no joke). Nothing. So I put my slippers on and go out to the porch and see the side gate is OPEN.

Mama Bear goes into a panic...its pouring down rain..I run to the front of the house...nothing...and I'm screaming... MILO! MILO! MILO! nothing. I run into the house, put on a coat, grab an umbrella, and throw Charlie's food into his bowl. I think to myself...do I get in the car? (Thoughts of the squeaky toy dog commercial are running through my head)

Then I look 3 houses down and through the rain I see a lil dog peeing on every in a yard...that's my Milo. I scream at him and he turns around like...What? Are you talking to me?

Yes I am you lil shit! I most certainly am talking to you. He then proceeds to go into the yard of the house for sale directly to our right and run up on the porch...during this time I see an older gentleman at the house standing in the driveway...he's been watching this whole episode for the past 5 minutes...did it NEVER OCCUR TO HIM that a lady who is screaming in her front yard with an umbrella and wearing slippers...might be looking for a little dog that is wandering around the neighborhood? Evidently not!

I pick up the lil pain in the ass and walk us back to our house. Letting him know what I think about him the whole way. Then I see something in the front yard that resembles a bird...but not really. Then I look up onto the porch and see a crow missing from my porch... I know Milo didn't do this...

Looks like the 2 of them had quite a party in the front yard while mama was on the phone... They both got put in timeout for awhile after this latest adventure...
Here is what's left of the crow...

FYI-Mr. Jetplane left the gate open... he has been punished and will be buying me a new crow from Michael's.

Lord help me when we have children...

The Gallery Wall is Up

I've been day dreaming about this for quite some time. I love photographs and I especially love the pictures I have recently received from my mother. They are black and white pictures of my grandmother when she was in grade school, her confirmation, and wedding to my grandfather. I also got a picture of my great grandparents wedding day with my great aunt and uncle as their maid of honor and best man. These pictures mean the WORLD to me and I am amazed at just how much my grandmother, mother, and I look alike.

I purchased all the frames from Walmart, Target, and Kmart. All were sale and came with mats. Mr. Jetplane helped a great deal in the hanging of all the pictures...with only minimal complaining.

PB Style on a PBR budget

I, like a lot of people, fell in love with this...

But unfortunately the Jetplanes are not made out of money and I adamantly refuse to spend a lot of money on seasonal decor. Therefore I only buy these items on sale or even better at the end of the season.

I honestly don't even want to go into thinking about how much that look would cost....its ridiculous, but it is awesome... Don't worry if you can afford it...I'm not hating the player...just the game.

So what did lil Mrs. Jetplane do? Well so glad you asked...

First of all I don't have that much space to work with. So I needed to condense the look. The pumpkins are fake ones that I bought from Michael's last year for seriously 80% off. I thought about painting the them creme last year, even bought the paint but got lazy and didn't do it.

The wicker pumpkins are from Michael's regularly $24.99 and I purchase them on sale for $19.99/pc. I purchased the crows, leaves, and straw from Michael's, as well, all for 50% off. Crows were $2.49/pc, leaves $2.99, and straw $5.99.

The lanterns were purchased from Walmart in the Lawn and Garden department. They were regularly $25.00/pc and I bought them for $10.00/pc. I placed some of the leaves in them and then used a battery operated votive in each lantern.

The black metal plant stand, I have had forever. I believe I bought it at Lowes in Lawn and Garden. I have used it in everyone of my past apartments and houses on the balcony or porch as a table. I bought it for around $10 its metal and has held up for 7 years now.

The wreath was purchased at Big Lots last fall for under $10.00.

Yesterday I told Mr. Jetplane that I was going to give our house the PB look for around 10% of the cost. He said, "Great Honey!! What's PB?"

Oh boy...you would think he would have learned by know. He likes the look except he thinks the crows are creepy. I think that's why I like them. They had owls too, but they were alittle more expensive, and I'm a tight ass, so they didn't get purchased. Maybe if they go on 75-80% off, I'll pick up an owl or two and some of the larger crows.

So there you go, Casa de Jetplane Fall outdoor decor. I have more home improvement posts coming this week and potentially a giveaway... stay tuned.

Quite a nice lil weekend...

The Jetplanes had a great weekend that went by WAY too fast.

1. Friday we went to a party thrown by a pilot in Mr.'s class. All of the students were in attendance, I was the only girl there... well there were 2 girls if you count her.

2. Added a lil Fall decor to Casa de Jetplane

Found the lanterns on clearance at Walmart for $10.00 in the Garden area. Sorry the styrofoam is still in them. Here is our mantle and the new addition to the family...placed in the TV nook (aka shrine to TV). A placed a metallic pumpkin and squash I bought at Hobby Lobby last year on to 2 candle holders I've had forever (Big Lots find).

3. I'm planning on adding a liner to the back of my bookcases in the office, thoughts? Its wrapping paper from Michael's.

4. We saw Zombie Land on Saturday afternoon. OMG its gross and hilarious all at the same time. It was very much a dark comedy... which is just how I like it. Some may say we have a sick sense of humor...but oh well. All I have to say is stripper zombie with boobie tassels...and a wonderful cameo...which I will not share...

5. Last night we attended an oyster bake hosted by a committee that supports the military community here. It was wonderful. The house it was held at was amazing... I feel truly blessed to be in a town that supports their military so warmly. We met some wonderful local business owners and got the opportunity to get to know Mr.'s classmates alittle better. I ate raw oysters for the 1st time...I put a lot of cocktail sauce on them so I can't tell you if I really like them or not. But the shrimp...oh the shrimp...was divine...

Good ol Southern Hospitality. I met the wives of all the commanders in the training wing and they couldn't have been nicer. The fighter community is really embracing us all and I feel really grateful for that. This is my attire for the night...sorry by bathroom was a mess.

What Time is It??

Well if you really need to know, you'd be in luck if you popped on into our kitchen and check out our newest addition....I don't exactly know why, but for the longest time I've wanted a large clock. My initial intention was for this to go in the living room but it doesn't work in there so I put in the kitchen. I love it and it is slowly growing on Mr. Jetplane.
Sorry my kitchen is messy right now. Unfortunately our kitchen is a little smaller than I would have liked, but luckily we have 2 nice sized pantries so a lot of my kitchen appliances are hidden away in the pantries.
Clock was purchased at Target for $39.99.
My dream vision for kitchen...
I would love an all white kitchen with gray marble counter tops but since these cabinets are brand new I just can't do that...and Mr. Jetplane will NOT participate in painting brand new cabinets. Plus this house is not our FOREVER home and we want to make it more desirable for future renters once we move.
I have some realistic visions floating around in my head that works with the dark cabinets...but I'm not ready to share just yet.
All in due time...

Mr. Jetplane's Man Cave in Progress

DISCLAIMER: This is Mr. Jetplane's domain. I'm allowing him almost complete rein on this area. But I am trying to get him to stay in some sort of cohesive look...it is still very much a work in progress.
Also - the floor is showing up a lot more read in these pictures than it does in real life.
Here is the view coming up the stairs from the kitchen. Its an extremely narrow staircase. So narrow that our furniture (the sectional we had that was to go up there) didn't fit. Mr. and I even spent one afternoon taking the legs off of it to try to get it up the stairs...but to no avail. Sold it to a friend of ours...he got quite a deal.
The light brown love seat is the only piece of furniture that Mr. Jetplane owned from our previous house in Pcola. He bought it without me being present. I hate it, but it fit upstairs so its up there and the dogs sleep on it when we're up stairs. Yes, its an expensive ass dog bed at this moment.
The large brown furniture is all reclining furniture... what is that you ask...How did you get reclining furniture up the narrow staircase if your sleek modern sectional wouldn't go up there... well did you know that if the reclining furniture is on a metal base it can be disassembled rather easily into multiple parts?
Well neither did we... We couldn't get the whole section they sold at the store but we did negotiate for 2 of the couches (2 seats each) and a recliner.
I really dislike reclining furniture but this stuff is extremely comfortable, it fit up the stairs, and Mr. Jetplane loves it. Marriage is all about compromise, right?
Here is what became of my dream of a window seat. Mr. needed a place to study for flight school and his current master classes he's taking. The jets hanging from the ceiling where given to him from his great uncle that past away last year. He made models and they are some of Mr.'s prized possessions. Little did his uncle know when he was making for those 20+ years ago that his great nephew would be flying in an F15E.
This view shows 2 doors, the main one leads to the other side of the attic which is currently being used for storage. We hope to eventually (if we end up staying here for 3 years) to put in a bathroom, storage area, and bedroom which my office would go into. The other door on the left side is the entry into the bonus room.

Here is a better view of the furniture and Milo. The rug is from Lowe's for around $100. Its 8x12 and filled up the space nicely. We still need a table but its good for now.

Here's Mr. Jetplane other love his 55" television. Note the ceramic giraffe..that is his, its name is George and it has to come everywhere with us...unfortunately I'm not joking. The plant was a gift from Mr. Jetplane's family for my grandmother's funeral earlier this year. We're trying to keep it alive..it didn't fair very well during the move in my car.

Right now the walls have some sport and aviation pictures being displayed. The 'look' I think I've gotten him to go with will be similar to a squadron ready room.
We would like to put a bar in the other side behind the couches and an air hockey table. He wanted a pool table, but I've talked him out of that. Plus one of our friends bought a house down the street and they have a pool table in their bonus room, so he's good. The space is very large and he's really excited about the room.
Any ideas? I'm more than happy to hear them.

Casa de Jetplane in the makin'

So first off, thank you all for your support during my recent 'I suck at this' post about our work on our first home. I greatly appreciate it.

I appreciated it even more when I got a comment from Mrs. Limestone, who is a HUGE inspiration to me, as seen in my home office decor.

We all have trials and tribulations dealing with decorating our homes. Trying to determine what our style is and how to mold that into our partner's style, current home furnishings, lifestyle, budget, pets, kids, etc. etc. etc. Its always good to feel you are not alone in that battle.

A lot has been happening at the Jetplanes' household and I'm pretty excited to give you some details later this week with pictures. But just a lil taste of what's to come...

1. Deck is stained
2. Garage is organized and sealed the floor
3. New Furniture is purchased and arrived
4. Front Yard is almost completed

I think that's pretty good for living here under a month so far, don't you?

Side note: We see this house, while a first house for us, as an investment and will be a future rental property when we get stationed somewhere else. All decisions made (excluding painting my office turquoise) are to be cost effective, value adding, and easily maintainable for future renters.
Can't wait to give you all a peek...

Home Improvement Blues...

Do you ever watch home improvement shows, read home decorating blogs, obsess over decorating magazines and then feel like a total loser?

Well I do. I feel like full of ambition and ideas...but suck on the follow through. Anyone else?

I feel like I'm stuck in the middle of no where and can't find the pieces that I want. And the stores I want to go to (antique stores) close early.

I love all white rooms but... its not practical for our lifestyle and I adore dark wood.

I also have to do EVERYTHING on the cheap.

I'm a thrifty shopper and a searcher but sometimes I feel like I'm so impatience that I make purchases and then get them home and I'm like.... does this go? I don't know?

I feel like my whole house is blue or has blue accents? Anyone else?

I want navy, white, and green pillows for my living room and can't find them anywhere!

My gray living room will not be happening... it may be transitioned into a gray master bedroom.

My window seat up in the bonus room is no longer... Mr. Jetplane put a desk there for his studying.
I also have a husband that looks at me like I'm an idiot when I say... "Let's paint stripes in the guest bathroom!"
Anyone else is the same boat? Anyone else day dream about someone from HGTV coming to your house and decorating it for you?

Now we're WORKING....

Hello all... and welcome to my home office. 1st things 1st, we aren't completely done here. The shelves aren't organized properly and I still need to hang other things on the wall. I also still have to find something to put my printer on. But I wanted to post a couple of pictures.

This is the view from the door. I'm a little disappointed that the color isn't showing up quite as bright as it does in person. I selected Weathered Glass from Eddie Bauer at Lowe's. Please ignore the mass wires, we're still working on that. Can you spot a lil puggie?

On the wall is actually an art piece I did myself. They are all pieces of cards that we received from our wedding. We had tons of cards and I was saving them for some reason. I wanted to make something out of them but I couldn't figure out what.
I used an exacto knife and cut strips, lots and lots of strips. Then did a basket weave with them them and glued them to canvas. It might not be for everyone, but I love it.

And I lil more pug had to get in there....

I'm not finished, but I'm at a good stopping point for a couple of weeks. I still need curtains and to hang more pictures.
