Home Improvement Blues...

Do you ever watch home improvement shows, read home decorating blogs, obsess over decorating magazines and then feel like a total loser?

Well I do. I feel like full of ambition and ideas...but suck on the follow through. Anyone else?

I feel like I'm stuck in the middle of no where and can't find the pieces that I want. And the stores I want to go to (antique stores) close early.

I love all white rooms but... its not practical for our lifestyle and I adore dark wood.

I also have to do EVERYTHING on the cheap.

I'm a thrifty shopper and a searcher but sometimes I feel like I'm so impatience that I make purchases and then get them home and I'm like.... does this go? I don't know?

I feel like my whole house is blue or has blue accents? Anyone else?

I want navy, white, and green pillows for my living room and can't find them anywhere!

My gray living room will not be happening... it may be transitioned into a gray master bedroom.

My window seat up in the bonus room is no longer... Mr. Jetplane put a desk there for his studying.
I also have a husband that looks at me like I'm an idiot when I say... "Let's paint stripes in the guest bathroom!"
Anyone else is the same boat? Anyone else day dream about someone from HGTV coming to your house and decorating it for you?

I am the same way.

Because we live in an apartment, the living room, dining area, and kitchen are all done in red and black.

I LOVE red and black in homes, don't get me wrong...and I plan on keeping all 3 rooms those colors [even when we get a house] but I wish I was as talented as the famous people and could pick colors that flow nicely.

You're not alone! I could have written this myself... I see lots of blue in my home and am drawn to the same patterns and shapes no matter what room I'm decorating.

I wish I was one of those girls who could see something she likes and recreate it in no time (on a shoestring). Instead, I can say "Hey, that looks fabulous!" and then go home to enjoy my comfy (but not design-perfect) li'l abode.

So glad you shared!

I definitely feel this way. We are still partially in boxes because of our lack of follow-thru and my expensive taste. :) We really need to take a trip to IKEA, so we can get some stylish, yet cheap furniture.

I also feel like we have an extra burden because of the military – we have to choose sturdy pieces that will last moves or crappy, inexpensive pieces we know won't last. We also have to pick things that could work in multiple rooms because we never know how big our next house will be!

Don't let the blogs overwhelm you too much! Take a break if that's happening. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help. I'm thinking of hiring an e-decorator to help me finalize my ideas and provide me with some feedback. We need to upgrade our house a bit and I think this will really help. Good luck! It's nice to hear others feel the same way I do!

OMG- I feel the same way ALL. THE. TIME. I moved into my husband's "bachelor" pad - with the horrible hand me down from the parents 1970's house. Ugh. I have been trying to transform it ever since, but feel like it's such an impossible task sometimes & nothing really turns out the way I invision. I DREAM of Candice Olsen coming and transforming my house. I have even gone so far as to try to apply (but ever show takes place in LA or somewhere).

Don't worry girl - you are not alone!!!

XOXO
Sarah

I am the same way. I love the looks I see in the blogs/magazines/whatever but I can never seem to execute them. Or if I try, I always feel like it looks like I am trying too hard.

I just bought a house (we settle on September 24th) and it's new construction... so i'm definitely feeling your pain on this one.

my better half is less than cooperative, he wants wild colors and i'm more a fan of neutrals and dark wood (much like you!). It's an experience for sure, but i don't know how long i'll be able to deal with the white walls and beige carpet before my head explodes. :)

If you haven't already, check out www.younghouselove.com they are the source for ALL of my inspiration.

Good luck!!

Totally with you on this. We have about a zero dollar budget to decorate our house (rental- also limits things) and it is so hard to see all the beautiful homes that everyone else seems to have! I've learned just to slowly acquire things- that way I don't buy things I'll not like in the future just because I had to have something NOW. Unless of course it is super cheap. Hard to live with, but I think you'll like the end result better that way. (that's what I tell myself anyway, =))

I'm exactly the same way! I watch HGTV way too much and dream of painting rooms, cabinets, furniture - but the hubs? Doesn't see things my way... bummer.

I am so with you on this topic!! I adore HGTV and there are so many decorating blogs out there that are just as amazing. I do notice that I collect pictures around the web that are all in the same tone/style/themes, so at least I know I'm on the same page with myself :) Hubby has little opinion, so I'll get away with a lot! I'm a blue and white girl myself. No need to apologize for it- it's who you are!

BTW, I often think that decorators or people who live in amazing homes must not have dogs or kids b/c there is NO way they could keep their houses that way if they did. Our 90 lb beast gets everything dirty!!!

You and I are a lot alike. I have green everywhere but I love it. Green and white in the bathroom with my own pictures of green plants.

Now that I'm trying to pull together ideas for an entire house, I'm totally in that boat. Husby wants to get the WHOLE house painted before we move in. Excuse me?! You want me to pick out every single room color and have it all look fabulous before we even set foot into the house?!

If it were up to my husband, my entire house would be painted the same color beige, all the furnitur would be brown and that would be it.

When we first moved in our old house, I felt like we should do things together so he got an equal vote. A few months later when I was unhappy with how things were going, I realized I had been an idiot. Why would someone who doesn't really care get a vote? SO from then on he gets input but no vote. And guess what? He doesn't care anyway and Im a much happier woman :) And he much prefers how it turns out when I overule him.

So in other words, I understand with how you are feeling :)

I love home decorating anything.

On another note, I am definitely feeling this way about wedding planning for my own wedding right now. I've had to go on planning hiatus for a week or so to re-collect my thoughts.

I don't do too much of that craziness just yet, but I am in love with that sofa-ish thing! Where did you find it?

We are looking to buy very soon and I am super excited about decorating....but I have a fear that I will suck at it. I don't want to mess it up!

I'm sure your house will look beautiful! After seeing your office...I know you have great taste and a wonderful sense of style. Just keep searching :)

We bought our first house last fall and most of the walls are still bare because I am terrified to 'do it wrong'! I don't want to buy stuff and then be disappointed with how it turns out. I definitely need some professional help!
