Is it Black or White...
Black? Like Gwenie Paltrow's kitchen...
Or white like this gorgeous kitchen...
That is the question my friends. Our counter top is a Corian and appears to be relatively new. It is tan with flecks of white, gray, and black. The flooring we are putting in is a dark, real wood that will be carried in from the living room to the kitchen and into the family room. The wood color is similar to the flooring in the picture of the white kitchen above.
Here is the kitchen in all its glory with the original owner's belongings.
What was your first thought? Those kitchen cabinets on the right have to go??? Well that's what we thought too... Day 1 we ripped out the cabinets. Excuse the 2 big boxes we used those to help us hold the cabinets in place while removing all the screws, nails, and whatever else had been holding those things up since 1986.
So what's the consensus....black or white?
We have purchased fixtures for over the kitchen table and the sink, those are brushed nickel and were cheap at Lowe's so the new cabinet hardware will be brushed nickel. We are also set on removing the top portion of the Corian that is used as a backsplash. These pieces are glued on and not a portion of the countertop. This will be replaced with white subway tile with white or a gray/black grout.
So do we go black or white?
* Sorry I do not have links for the 2 kitchen pictures, if you do, please advise and I will give appropriate credit.
** FYI - All the appliances will be replaced. All trim work will be white and all doors are getting replaced with new, white doors.

I say white b/c of the floor color. Well, I like the white, so I guess that's a factor too, but with the floor color I think white will look best :) If you go black, your kitchen might be super dark...
Just my 2 cents :) LOVE the new more open look w/o those huge cabinets...it looks awesome!
That black kitchen is AMAZING but I think it only works because it is enormous! Your plans sound great, I would go with white. I re-did my kitchen myself last year and I did go with white, with brushed nickle knobs and it looks great. I did a brushed tin tile backsplash that matches wonderfully, but subway tile would have looked amazing too!
I want my next kitchen to be all white with dark granite. So I love the white but I feel like the black with the light counter tops would look so awesome.
My vote is white because of the size - I think it will open it up and make it feel clean and pretty! But I also vote for those dark counter tops, hide stains better!
I vote for white. It's so clean and sleek looking. Plus, if you do black cabinets with dark floors, the room will look itty bitty.
Definitely go white with black countertops! So clean, sleek and chic! I'm not too sure I like black in the kitchen like Gwynnie's... I don't NOT like it, but I don't think I like it either... just rubs me the wrong way!
Cabinets should be white to open up the space! (As long as you don't mind fingerprints and dirt on white cabinets...)
Good luck!
I would vote white since your floors would be a darker shade.
I'd go with white! It'll always look clean and fresh.
Either way, I bet it will look great!!
I would say since the floors are going to be on the dark side, go for white! It always looks fresh and sleek and definitely opens it all up!
Since it is a smaller space I would say go white. If it were my kitchen I would put bead board on the back side of the lower cabinets and paint that white as well. I think the white will look great and classic with your dark wood floors. Plus, when you buy apliances you will probably get stainless steel or black. If you had black apliances and black cabinets it would start to feel pretty heavy.
i love love love the black...but I have to agree with everyone else and say white because of the size. :) it looks great. and i love that you took out the cabinets!!!! :)
Wow - I don't think you can go wrong! I love both of your sample photos. Would white be really hard to keep clean? That's my only concern.
I would choose white. It will make the kitchen look sleek and clean. I have seen many kitchens w/ white cabinets and they really stay clean. They don't get dirty like you would think they would :)

I vote white because it's so crisp and light and airy. It'd look gorgeous with the floors you mentioned. If you went with black in such a small space with such dark floors, it might feel a little dark and cramped in your kitchen. That said, I love how much you opened up the space by taking out the cabinets! I can't wait to see the finished product :-)
white
Love the white! It might be harder to keep clean but I think it would be well worth it!
B and I recently had this convo! Our kitchen is tiny with a sunny oak colored cabinet theme. I think that white would look great to refinish them, but he liked his mom's dark cabinets. I had to explain to him how dark looks better in BIGGER spaces with higher ceilings, and smaller kitchens look better with light or white cabinets.
I think your kitchen is kind of in the middle (large, yet not lofty) and would look best with white cabinets but black counter and pulls to make it fun. LOVE your kitchen by the way!!!! So excited for you guys :)
I have always been a huge lover of white kitchens and when we moved into our house we painted ours white. I love them, but they do get dirty really easily and kind of drive me crazy. I love the idea of black but I do wonder with your floors if it might be too harsh. Have you thought about gray or a darker tan?
I vote white. I can't wait to see what you do!
I'm going against the grain here and voting for black. I think white is just so "expected" and not very exciting. With those upper cabinets removed, it opens the kitchen and there appears to be plenty of light to carry the black. The white subway tiles would look fantastic with the black cabinets. I say be a little daring and go with black.
I would go with white because it would open it up more and make the space seem bigger.
Wow, what a huge difference it made taking those cabinets down! I say white, it seems timeless to me :) Cannot wait to see the transformation!
I'm going against the grain - black for bottom cabinets, white for the uppers. Since your countertops are so light, I think white would look washed out and not the look you're going for. I think black is a better choice for that. White for the top will look airy and make the room feel bigger.
I say white. It really opens up and brigthens an area while remaining timeless. Whatever you end up doing, I'm sure it will look great though. Best of luck!
I'mvoting for Black. I think the lighter colored countertops require a darker cabinet. And the white does get dirty eay (we have white) and looks more country casual, rather than current and stylish. (But I also like Brittany's idea of Black on the bottom to show off the countertop and the white on top to still have some airiness.)
We just redid our cabnits from a honey oak to black. They look amazing now! :) I think black would look better with your countertops (and it's less cookie cutter), good luck either way!!!
