She's Crafty....

Well, Mrs. Jetplane likes to think she could be. I've been wanting buffet for quite some time now. I registered for one at Pottery Barn in the hope within the first year of marriage we'd buy it with our 10% registery discount. Well it's now at $999, I don't think that's going to be happening in the next 5 months. That being said I've also been itching to buy a console table and paint it sort of an aqua color.

Saturday I ventured out to the unfinished wood furniture store in search of the table that, much to the Mr. disgust, would be painted blue. Well, lucky for him I didn't find the type of table that I was looking for but I did find these lil beauty.

Its costs about $450 unfinished. I would paint it black or stain it very dark. Here's what I have been comparing it to at Pottery Barn.

Above is my 1st choice.
So now the issues are these:

How do I get this home?
Can I really paint/stain this myself?

I have faith. Absolutely you can do it. You can go to Home Depot, (or whichever home improvment store nearby)and ask the people in the paint department where to start. There are also tons of tips online. Go for it! You'll feel so good about the fact that you did it yourself afterwards.

What a good buy!! You can definitely do it, and I think you'll end up liking it more- because it will have your work as a wonderful memory. A ton of my bedroom furniture we painted. Just don't forget to prime the wood! :) Good luck with it!

All of the wood furniture my husband and I have bought (didn't inherit) we have purchased from an unfinished wood store like the one you mentioned. It's great because you can buy items in a set along and along without spending a ton of $$ at one time. I've helped him stain our nightstands and tv stand so far, and we're about to tackle a dining room table. It's not too hard, just make sure you have a well ventilated space to work in (and a fan)! You can do it!

You can definitely do it!
And how amazing is it going to look? Can't wait to see the finished product :)
(Haven't quite figured out how you are going to get it home yet though! lol)

ok, so how far is this unfinished wood store from your house, cos for a small fee they may be able to deliver it to you, or if you have or know anyone with a truck you can just pick it up yourself, but I would suggest making sure that you bring blankets and pad that thing under and wrap a blanket around so it doesn't get damaged during travel.
Staining wood is super easy! You can totally do it! you can even ask someone at your local home depot or lowes to show you how to do it and what satin would be best for the look you want. just remember, follow the grain of the wood! If you couldn't tell, I've done this tons of times, with my headboard and my book shelves and my desk, hahaha.:)
I'm so exicted for you and I think you should totally do this! yay!

You can do it & I can't wait to see the results. I've been looking for a good way to showcase some of our dishes & seeing these gave me a great idea of where we could put something like this one - I especially like the dark stain!

I've never stained anything before but I say go for it! You can rent a flat bed truck at Home Depot for $20 an hour. My husband did this when he built our privacy fence.

Yes, you can do it. My mom took an old ugly bedroom set that had been in my fsmily for years and refinished it herself. It took her many months to get the old paint of (she used a hand sander), but it's absolutely beautiful! The good thing about unfinished furniture is that you can do whatever you want with it.

When my mom was finished with everything, my family couldn't believe it was the same bedroom set! It included a headboard, footboard, dresser, chest of drawers, and a desk. I LOVE it!

I've never bought anything unfinished before. At least you wouldn't have to sand off any old paint, so that is a plus. I'd say go for it! And post lots of photos when you're finished! :-)
